Dhenkanal Collectorate is housed in building of British Era and situated in the heart of Dhenkanal Town. During my 10 years stay in the town, I have been to the Collectorate only twice. Both the times, it was related to pension work (not of mine !!!). Most of the time, the collectorate is pretty calm and cool with a couple of arm ed police men protecting the treasuries. The hustle-bustle returns during the opposition organized rallies when the front and back gates of the building are closed and the police men guard the complex. In front of the building, everyday a small daily market used to sit (I am not sure if it still sits there or not).

(Notice the boundary wall, a surprise to me. It seems thats a new addition to this old building)
This Collectorate is the office of Dhenkanal District Magistrate (DM). Currently, the DM of Dhenkanal-to my surprise- is a non-oriya lady named Smt. Usha Padhee. Her Official address can be found here. Recently, She had been in news because of her personal interest to promote Oriya language. The Kannada lady has ordered the use of Oriya and only oriya in all official matters. The order even applies to the name-plates of officials which should be in oriya only. Some critics have termed this step as "hollow" or "gimmick", but to me its a welcome step in taking the government towards the people. Knowing Dhenkanal well, I am sure, this will send a right signal to the rural people. Kudos to the DM ...
