IIMC-Dhenkanal

Indian Institute of Mass communication (IIMC) was set-up in August 1993 as a branch of IIMC, Delhi. The institute offers 2 Post Graduate Diploma courses in Oriya and English Journalism. Besides teaching, the institute carries out media studies and research work. In the past, the institute has conducted assessment study for State AIDS cell and also for Ministry of Tribal Affairs on NGOs working for tribal community. The institute has been instrumental in operating a few FM stations for villages in the outskirts Dhenkanal (Read Ex-Resident Director, Prof. Bibhuti Bhusan Mohanty's comment).

The Institute is situated right behind the Rajbati. For the first few years, the institute was operating from a make-shift class room in Kunjakant Temple. The institute had rented, in Kunjakanta area, a few buildings/houses and used them as Boys and Girls hostels. After 3/4 years, the institute moved to their own campus, which now has Administrative Block, Boys Hostel, Girls hostel and Academic Block.
It was because of the efforts of the then MP of Dhenkanal, K.P. Singh Deo that the Institute was set-up in Dhenkanal. I felt, it was one of his fabulous achievements that the institute was established in Dhenkanal as a branch of IIMC,Delhi. During 1993 many people in Delhi might not have known that Dhenkanal is a district in the state of Orissa. In fact, the magnitude of his effort could be felt from the inaguration ceremony itself. The then Cheif Minister of Orissa, (late) Mr. Biju Pattanaik was supposed to be the Chief Guest of the ceremony, but at the last moment (late)Mr. Radhanath Rath (Editor of The Samaja) replaced Mr. Pattanaik. Was there a genuine reason behind the absence of Ex-Cheif Minister or was that politics ? Frankly speaking, I don't know the truth, but I'd love to guess the latter. Subsequently, Mr. Singh Deo has thwarted attempts to link the IIMC, Dhenkanal to Utkal University. When Utkal University doesn't offer any course on Journalism what good will it do to IIMC, Dhenkanal ?? Let IIMC, Delhi control its branch at Dhenkanal. You can know more about this from here (go to page 18).

The stretch usually sees heavy truck traffic because of its prominence of NH 16 which connects two metropolitan cities Kolkata, Bengal with Chennai, Tamilnadu. At Manguli, it takes a left to NH 55 through Choudwar- Khuntuni to Dhenkanal. This passage with filled picturesque scene of trees, forests and mountains. Jay Panda's Heijau comes to Dhenkanal town

With both State and National elections another 7 months away, Dhenkanal is getting attention from Jay Panda. His Heijau  initiative is very different and far more people friendly than current leaders of this day and age who prefer to deliver speeches from podium and social media. Looking at the video of the procession, it could be gauged that the movement is gaining momentum in various towns in Odisha. Currently, BJD led by Naveen Patnaik looking at his 5th term as Chief Minister, Congress seem to be losing its 2nd position, BJP lacking fire power to deliver knock out punch, and an emergence of a new group of disgruntled Biju loyalists. For Dhenkanal Lok Sabha's seat: will Tathagata Satpathy be able to hold on to it against anti-incumbency? Will K P Singhdeo make a come back or his wards make an entry? Will there be new faces? For Dhenkanal Sadar Assembly seat: will there be a new face from BJP? will Nabin Nanda contest as independent? The coming 7 months will certain...
